The Kosciuszko Wild Horse Heritage Act mandates the NSW Government retain 3,000 Heritage brumbies in four retention zones in the park.

The Minister, who has control of the portfolio, Penny Sharpe, refuses to conduct a count of brumbies in retention zones and declare how many may live in each zone, yet has moved forward with a decision to cruelly aerial shoot brumbies in retention zones where Brumbies are protected.

Without knowledge of how many brumbies are in the retention zones, this may in fact be a breach of the Legislation in force that protects the Heritage value of Brumbies.

The NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into aerial shooting, has yet to deliver its recommendations, yet Penny Sharpe is moving forward with barbaric aerial shooting strenuously opposed by a majority, in either retention zones or other areas of the Park.

Evidence given at the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into aerial shooting by an expert Vet, is that the aerial shooting is inhumane. This evidence being ignored by Penny Sharpe. Penny Sharpe is also ignoring calls for a population count of Brumbies in retention zones.

An independent count underway, funded by the Brumby Community is reporting that numbers in one particular zone are at least 41% less than the numbers relied upon by Penny Sharpe. The independent Count is using cutting edge AI technology, and final results will be available shortly.

Recent allegations NPWS are involved in sending brumbies from KNP to at least one backyard knackery "off the books" has shocked the brumby community and Members of Parliament. Not only because a knackery death is cruel and barbaric, but this raises even more question marks about numbers that have been removed from the park "off the books" with numbers that will not have been taken into account. Brumbies were noted as having been sent to Corryong Knackery in 2023.

The Invasive Species Council seem to have infiltrated decision-making processes of the Environment Department and hold undue control and power over decisions, made by Minister Sharpe, including fabricated numbers in the final decision to aerially shoot brumbies which the Minister accepted despite the numbers not having been entered into the NPWS portal.

Numbers allegedly collected by Invasive Species Council (ISC) on paper forms allegedly in supermarkets and other street venues and then entered into the NPWS online portal ought be rejected. The numbers ought be considered as only one submission from ISC

I call for a Parliamentary Inquiry into National Parks and Wildlife Services, the Environment Department and activities, of Atticus Fleming who engaged in negotiations to end brumby shooting in November 2023 on an agreement that only 500 brumbies be shot.

There must be a halt to ground or aerial shooting brumbies pending the outcome of the new Parliamentary Inquiry, a count of brumbies in retention zones using an up-to-date method acceptable to stakeholders, and a declaration about how many Brumbies may live in each retention zone.

This is non-negotiable.
